History of Summerlin Real Estate

In the mid 1950's, Howard Hughes purchased over 20,000 acres of land on the far western Edge of Las Vegas. Considered highly speculative at the time, the Las Vegas land sat vacant and undeveloped until the Summa corporation began development of Summerlin North in 1990. Over three years of planning took place before development began and the community was named after Howard Hughes Grandmother. In 1994 the Summa Corporation was renamed to The Howard Hughes corporation which would later be sold and become a subsidiary of Chicago based General Growth Properties, the second largest U.S. Based Real Estate Investment Trust.

Summerlin is being designed as a City within the city of Las Vegas as a place to live, work and play. Upon completion, the 36 sq. mile project is estimated to be home to over 200,000 residents with multiple business centers, shopping centers, parks and entertainment venues.
